Radiohead might have been in New York last night laying waste to a no doubt over packed Roseland Ballroom, but it was at Le Poison Rouge where things were getting ethereal and taking a turn for the unreal. Supporting their friends and tour-mates, The Album Leaf, Sister Crayon graced Manhattan last night with a performance that no one within that venue will ever forget.
As wicked images flashed across the length of two projection screens, Sister Crayon sharpened a set of invisible knives and through the power of their music, astrally projected themselves and sliced at the tops of everyone's skulls. It's been a while since I'd seen something so powerful come out of a band that is just starting to make their mark. A good way to know if a band is on to something special is to take the time to step out of yourself for a few moments and look around the crowd to study their reactions to the music. Stretched across the face of everyone in attendance was a wide toothy grin set below a pair of blissfully dilated pupils.
Sister Crayon is a band born of atmosphere and the ability to build walls of color around your dancing frame as you sway to the hypnotic drum arrangements, spooky synth, and operatic, cascading vocals of Terra Lopez. Each and every time the band wrapped up one of their jams, before moving into the next, cries of joy and astonishment burst from the crowd as they urged the band to continue delivering the goods. The response was so positive that afterward you could hardly scroll through your twitter feed without finding the bands name as anyone who was able was shouting their praise across the world wide web.
Later in the evening, after a memorizing and lengthy performance by The Album Leaf, the band was joined on stage by the sultry siren, Terra, for what could only be described as an epic cover of Nirvana's "On a Plain". Those who chose to stick around were treated to something truly wonderful as the song took on a whole new guise after being re-imagined by The Album Leaf's unique style. Couple that with Lopez lending to the chorus and sprinkling the verses with her rapturous vocal tones and every Nirvana enthusiast in that room was left weak in the knees and barely able to breathe.
Perhaps this review appears a little one sided, but honestly, there isn't a single thing that I could say about Sister Crayon that isn't positive. An extremely humble and hyper-visual band, Sister Crayon displays in spades what many new bands fresh on the scene lack. Never afraid to embrace their fan base and pour every ounce of energy they have within them into their performances the band is a force to be reckoned with. I can only hope that the success of their debut album and tour brings them back to our neck of the woods very soon for another chance to witness their power and charisma.
